2009 APEN Roadshow

"Fostering Rural Innovation and Change"

10am-3.30pm, Various dates and locations February/ March 2009 (See below)

Do you support agricultural producers in changing their farm practices?

Are you involved in developing the capacity of rural communities?

Is innovation that intangible quality that you'd like to encourage in your clients?

The Australasia-Pacific Extension Network was proud to present to you an enlightening and enjoyable day with Dr Ian Plowman.

Dr Plowman drew on some of his research, his consultancy work and his extensive experience to bring us a workshop specifically tailored to people working in agriculture, resource management and community development.

Slides of his presentation are here.

Benefits from attending included:

  • Understanding the four determinants of human behavior, and why resistance to change is both healthy and normal. And why, in today's world, it can also be fatal.
  • Understanding the personalities of primary producers, how those personalities differ from the broader population and the consequences of those differences for innovation.
  • Understanding how to foster innovation in primary industry associations, and why most are unconsciously conservative.
  • Understanding why some country towns are resilient and thriving, whist others, with seemingly the same attributes, are in decline.
  • Understanding why humans and their social structures are instinctively conservative and how they and their leaders unconsciously collude to block all innovation.
  • Understanding some alternate forms of social organization within which innovation is likely to thrive.
  • Participants will receive a full set of workshop notes. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

Dr Ian Plowman is an energetic and informative facilitator, presenter and coach. With a highly participative and engaging style, Ian leaves his clients enlightened and equipped with a range of tools to enhance their potential.  Ian is an experienced social and organizational researcher and evaluator. He has worked for over 20 years in the private sector, government, university and with rural communities helping them to find solutions whilst equipping them to address similar future issues for themselves.
